AC Repair Costs Vary More Than You’d Think. Here’s Why.

Most homeowners expect a single, clean number. The reality is that AC repair costs span a pretty wide range because “my AC isn’t working” can mean anything from a $150 capacitor fix to a $2,500 compressor replacement. The final number depends on:

  • What broke: Some components are cheap to swap; others are not.
  • Your system’s age and refrigerant type: Older systems using phased-out R-22 refrigerant are significantly more expensive to service.
  • Labor rates in your area: Eastern Massachusetts labor rates run on the higher end of national averages, largely due to the regional cost of living.
  • Time of year: Calling during peak summer heat means higher demand, and some companies charge more for urgent or same-day service.

Common AC Repairs and What They Typically Cost

Capacitor Replacement: Roughly $150–$400

This is one of the most frequent summer service calls, and fortunately, one of the more affordable ones. The capacitor is a small electrical component that helps the compressor and fan motors start and keep running. When it fails, your system might click on and off, hum without starting, or just not kick on at all.

The part itself is inexpensive. You’re mainly paying for the diagnostic visit and a tech’s time. Most capacitor swaps are done in a single visit, and the whole job generally falls in the $150–$400 range installed, though your actual cost will vary.

Refrigerant Recharge / Leak Repair: Roughly $200–$1,500+

If your system is low on refrigerant, it’ll cool poorly, run constantly, and eventually ice over. A straight recharge (just topping off the system) is typically the lower end of this range. But here’s the important part: refrigerant doesn’t just disappear. If your system is low, there’s usually a leak somewhere, and that changes the math considerably.

Fan motor replacement generally runs somewhere in the $400–$900 range depending on which motor, the brand, and the labor involved. These are approximate figures, so get a specific quote for your system.

Thermostat Issues: Roughly $100–$350

Sometimes the problem isn’t the AC itself. It’s the thermostat telling it what to do. A faulty thermostat can cause all sorts of confusing behavior: short cycling, not reaching set temperatures, or the system not turning on at all. Basic thermostat repairs or replacements generally run in the $100–$350 ballpark. If you’re upgrading to a smart thermostat at the same time, factor in a bit more for the device itself.

Evaporator or Condenser Coil Problems: Roughly $500–$1,800+

Dirty, frozen, or damaged coils are a common culprit behind poor cooling performance. A coil cleaning might be on the lower end of that range. An actual coil leak or full replacement is a much bigger job, and costs can vary quite a bit depending on system size and accessibility.

The compressor is the heart of the system. It circulates refrigerant and does most of the heavy lifting. When it fails, it’s the most expensive repair you’ll face short of full system replacement.

Compressor replacement runs roughly $1,200–$2,500 for most residential systems, though larger or more complex units can push well beyond that. This is also the repair where the repair-versus-replace conversation becomes important, because the numbers start to get close.

When to Repair vs. When to Replace

This question comes up constantly, and there’s a useful rule of thumb: if the repair cost is approaching half the cost of a new system, replacement is often the smarter move, especially if the unit is more than 10 years old.

A few other signs that it might be time to stop putting money into an aging unit:

  • You’ve had multiple repairs in a single season
  • The system uses R-22 refrigerant (parts and refrigerant are increasingly expensive and hard to source)
  • Cooling is uneven throughout your home despite repairs
  • Your energy bills have crept up steadily without a clear reason
